Book The Premonition
The Premonition by Michael Lewis is an entertaining and educational book about an epidemic in China that is causing havoc around the world. It tells the story of an outbreak of COVID-19, a virus that can cause devastating disease. The author follows Carter Mecher, the man who drafted the government’s pandemic strategy, and his partner Joe DeRisi, a scientist who developed a chip that contained all the world’s viruses. Charity Dean, a local health official in California, is also featured in this book.
Lewis interviewed Dean and Joe DeRisi, the microbiologist at the University of California, San Francisco, about the outbreak. The two were masked and were in the field during a winter storm. Lewis also used a Zoom call to conduct the interviews. In a moment, Lewis was able to interview Dean without the two being recognized by the audience. The interviews were not recorded in order to avoid revealing the identities of the two subjects, and the conversation is not available online.

They have decided to name their new business Rosa in honor of the late Rosa Malone, a pioneering Black woman who lived in Rosedale Park. Rosa died at the age of 96, and the cafe will be named in her honor. The new coffee shop is set to open on June 11.
Rosa is a coffee shop in Detroit named after the late Rosa, who owned the shop before she passed away. Heather and Charity hope that the coffee shop will embody Rosa’s knowledge of the city. After choosing the name Rosa, the two surveyed customers and received over 175 responses, mostly from the neighborhood. As the first step, the couple contracted a Black-owned coffee roaster to produce the coffee that will be served in Rosa’s shop.
